This FREE summer camp for girls in grades 8-12 is a fun and exciting introduction to cybersecurity. In this four-day camp, students will learn about hacking, privacy, viruses and staying safe online.
The camp is hosted by the BYU Cyber Security Research Lab, part of the Information Technology program, and will run from July 26 - 29, 2016. Camp hours are from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, but will end an hour early at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Sponsored by Microsoft, Adobe, 3M, Fireeye, Raytheon and Heroic, the camp will be packed with fun, hands-on activities. Students will build their own computer (a Raspberry Pi ) and use it to send encrypted messages to friends, break codes and hack into websites - all legally, of course! Students get to take their computer home with them for free, thanks to generous support from our sponsors.
The camp will be run by an almost all-female team of IT students here at BYU under the supervision of Dr. Dale Rowe, Director of the Cyber-Security Research Lab.
"All the research and our own experience has shown that this age range is a critical time for young women to develop an interest in cybersecurity,” Rowe said. “This year we have a brand new cybersecurity space-game experience that has never been attempted before. The students and I are thrilled to be able to let these girls be the very first to try it out."
